"National Coming out of the Shadows Day"

March for Legalization

Chicago will come out of the shadows for a mass mobilization on March 10th, 2010.
The Immigrant Youth Justice League (IYJL) is working with community organizations for a mass youth-led immigrant rights mobilization in Chicago, and national coordinated actions by youth and students starting on March 10th, 2010 in support for a path towards legalization.

IYJL members have been “coming out” or openly identifying as undocumented immigrants, and speaking about our stories, as a strategy to get the issue of immigration in people’s minds, and on the national agenda. In collaboration with the national youth-led network United We Dream, students and youth from around the country will be organizing “coming out of the shadows” actions between March 10th and March 21st, starting right here in Chicago.

We live everyday in fear and we are tired of it. We want to be able to talk about our lives and our stories without fearing persecution or deportation. We are not free to travel, go to school, work, live, but we refuse to be helpless.

In Chicago on March 10th, 2010 youth are calling for a community mobilization from Union Park to Federal Plaza, ending with a mass coming out direct action demonstration by undocumented youth. This “coming out of the shadows” is meant as a call for leadership from Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), who has been supportive of immigrant youth, but has not taken action to pass immigration reform this year. IYJL has also extended an invitation for a place at the table to the Senator, as well as President Barack Obama and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, so that they can hear the proposals for immigration reform from the people that are affected the most.

In these times, we must remember our dignity, courage and perseverance. And we must work together for the comprehensive immigration reform our country needs. It is time we start climbing the mountain again, and this time we will reach the top.

This is the year to make immigration reform the number one priority on President Obama's agenda. But to achieve this, we must work together.

Together, we must start the climb!
Together, we must reach the top!
Together, we must lift our voices!
Together, we must go to the streets!
Together, we must and will March on March 10 2010!
We demand immigration reform now!

Help us spread the word; invite everyone you come in contact with!
More and updates will be posted on our new website: www.iyjl.org

New Flyers are attached!

Where: 400 W. Superior St. Chicago, IL

Who: Community Leaders and Youth Organizers of the March 10th Immigrant Rights demonstration

On February 18, 2010, a denial letter was received from the Assistant Director of the Public Way Permit Division, Michael Simon, denying the February application.

Description

The Justice Mission/Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Mission and other organizations and volunteers are working on a campaign of humanitarian aid effort for Haitian earthquake victims. As of Thursday Jan 14th 2010 the campaign was launched. One more time we have come together to bring aid to the most needed ones. Recently, in November 2009 we accomplished the Humanitarian Aid for El Salvador with all of your help, and now one more time we ask for your help to bring hope for those without hope. Help us spread the word, forward and join us with your donations.

"[A 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the island nation of Haiti yesterday leaving large portions of the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, in ruins. Thousands are suspected to be dead, according to the New York Times.

The earthquake, the largest in the region in over 200 years, hit Haiti shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday and severely damaged many buildings in the country, including the presidential palace.
Throughout the night, over 30 aftershocks of 4.5 magnitude or higher hit Haiti and set off tsunami warnings in nearby Cuba. By morning, Haitian President René Préval suspected that over 100,000 people perished due to the earthquake, The BBC reports.

The United Nations reported that five of its workers were killed and over 100 went missing, including the group’s head, Hédi Annabi, after the earthquake destroyed the UN mission’s headquarters in Haiti. The Catholic archbishop of Haiti, Joseph Serge Miot, was also one of the victims of the earthquake.

United States President Barack Obama said that the U.S. aid agencies had begun to send help and search-and-rescue teams to Haiti.
“This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share,” Obama said in the White House diplomatic reception room, according to the New York Times.]"

STOP THE DEPORTATION OF STUDENTS!

Stop Rigo's deportation
Stop the deportation of undocumented students
Fight for fair immigration reform!

The work to stop Rigo's deportation continues.

This student from the University of Illinois at Chicago is a good person, student, an asset to the community, a friend.
His set date for deportation is December 16th, 2009, and most legal options have been exhausted.

His deportation, and the deportation of other undocumented immigrant students illustrate what is wrong with current immigration laws. We need to demand that ICE immediately halt Rigo's deportation through an administrative closure or to defer his deportation proceedings, stop deporting immigrant students, and that our legislators work to quickly pass just and humane immigration reform.

Rigo and millions of others like him can not wait.

We have just 16 days to show ICE that we have had enough of seeing our youth deported. We have just 16 days to send thousands of faxes to DHS Secretary Napolitano and ICE Director John Morton. We have just 16 days to stop Rigo's deportation!

What you can do:

  • Show your solidarity on Friday December 4th to the Rally to Stop Deportations, 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church, (77 W. Washington St) - Flier attached

  • Invite your friends, family, students, co-workers, loved ones, club members, to come be in solidarity to stop the Deportation of Rigo Padilla and Pass Immigration Reform, because we cannot let one more youth get deported. Use the facebook invite: http://www.facebook.com/#/event.php?eid=179828538299&ref=ts

  • Make sure you have sent a fax! We want to send 10,000 by the end of this week. It's free to you, and no need for a fax machine. It goes to ICE director John Morton, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and Senators Richard Durbin and Roland Burris. Together these faxes show that Rigo has support from his community, and CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

    Send your fax here: http://icirr.e-actionmax.com/takeaction.asp?aaid=184

  • Get your friends, family, students, co-workers, loved ones, club members to send a fax too! Bring a lap top to a class, a gathering, a school hallway, an after-school activity, and have people send faxes on the spot (you would need internet connection). Alternatively you can gather people's Name, E-mail, Address, Zip Code, and tell them you will submit the fax online for them (show them the text of the fax).

  • Volunteer to get arrested in December 12th. If Rigo's deportation has not been addressed, we are planning on organizing a civil disobedience action downtown Chicago. There would be trainings for the participants, and conversations with the police. Anyone who is interested must be a U.S. citizen, over the age of 18, and have no outstanding warrants.

Thank you for your continuing work and support.

Description

The Justice Mission and Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Mission are working on a campaign of humanitarian aid for El Salvador.

"In the night between November 7-8, 2009 heavy rains fell on El Salvador, as a result of Hurricane Ida, and caused landslides from the volcano Chinchontepec and flooding of rivers in the municipalities of San Vicente, Verapaz, San Cayetano and Tepetitan, Istepeque and Tecoluca and in all municipalities in the Department of San Vicente. This storm has left a terrible trail of damage: 124 have been found dead, there are missing persons, houses destroyed or damaged, ruined fields and crops, damaged roads, all the overland routes to the municipalities affected are inaccessible, as well as damage to essential services as lack of water, electricity, etc.."
(

*The number of casualties is now over 136 people, 10,000+ have been affected and over 2,000 people are missing. Numbers are increasing on a daily basis.

We are inviting and urging all organizations and individuals to join us in this campaign to bring humanitarian help to El Salvador.
As of this moment we are gathering donations. This is anything from clothing, canned and dry (inperishable) foods, medical supplies and monetary help. Please, no actual medicines however.

The strategy:

The Justice Mission, along with all the help from individuals and organizations, will drive all the donations gathered to El Salvador NEXT WEEK.
Our goal is to fill two semi-trucks with donations, and as of right now we have a mobile clinic ready with supplies and doctors to drive to El Salvador as well.
